The basic thing to remember about Russians is that they are xenophobes, they look upon outsiders as threats. They are better when they emigrate to other countries, but don’t look for any support from Russians for ecumenical anything.

People forget that for centuries the groups that eventually became the basis for the nationalities of modern Europe came through Eastern Russia and made a mess on their way through.

Most of the people at the center of power in Russia remember the world status of the Soviet Union as they forget the oppression. They were “safer”, for a given value of “safe” under the Soviet system.

There is no good reason to antagonize the Russians, and plenty of reasons not to. Every display of disrespect for Russia moves the country back towards the Soviet system.

I still keep up with goes on over there, especially with Putin deciding he’s want to be more of a “world conquerer” than “peaceful ruler”.
