Wonderful

It isn’t just hot and humid in the eastern US, it is also polluted.

According to Jeff Masters, the current high pressure system that is dominating the weather in the East is generating ozone and trapping particulate matter, some of it from the wildfires out West, in addition to the triple digit heat indexes.

If you don’t have to go out and breathe it, don’t.

The air is pretty bad here in the heartland as well though there seems to be some air movement. Flying back to Atlanta tonight so I will get to enjoy some of it with you.

I just visited the TCEQ (that’s the Texas version of the EPA) air quality site, and the whole state is a sea of yellow… moderately bad air… with particulates as the chief culprit. Of course, as much as I dislike breathing it, we’re not as bad off as people like Jill who are close to the fires. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for those folks, and staying indoors as much as I can.

This really keeps my Mother and her friends house-bound so I’m doing a lot of running around. You can see it in a slightly off color of the sky which is just on the edge of consciousness, i.e. something’s wrong, but it’s not readily apparent what.

The new car has HEPA filtering on the air, so making the trips isn’t bad, but walking any distance across an asphalt parking lot is not a lot of fun. It’s almost to the point you need a canteen to go to the supermarket.

The thunderstorms are staying just off the coast. If one would come in, it would scrub the air and cool things off for a bit. You don’t want to trying watering, because that would just increase the humidity.

OT, I know it’s a couple of days early for Passing the Plate, but it seems you are not the only one to post, and yours is not the only state to offer, “interesting” license plates.

I’ve seen that, and my answer is that you can get a license plate on the reservation in Oklahoma that is actually tied to Oklahoma.

That they feature the WTC on that plate is an insult to those who died in Oklahoma City.

Saw a multi-colored floral Florida plate today.

Geez. You’ve got me trained thinking of you for planes and plates.

I posted that one a while back. We are about to enter the last group of universities and colleges.

Oh, the IL-76P is actually a roll on apparatus that can be installed in any IL-76. A Canadian company has a few. One problem is that the DC-10 watertanker in Victorville has been grounded after an incident the last time it flew. It should be available shortly, but the Feds haven’t approved it for their operations. It has about two-thirds the capacity of a IL-76P.

Apparently our State can’t afford to rent out too many of the Canadian “Superscoopers” and many of the planes being used are, well, kinda old. I think that was a problem with a couple of planes dropping water that crashed doing so a couple of years back.

Today there was a plume of smoke rising thousands of feet above the mountains. It looked like a cumulus cloud standing on it’s head on one of the peaks. They say the wind is keeping the flames away from the ridge, but seeing that plume coming toward town sent a little shiver through the spine. You can see smoke all along the top of the mountain range. This is truly sureal.

There was a long time when the air fleet was almost totally neglected, like a lot of the infrastructure, and there were an lot of losses. Another privatization scheme that didn’t work.

The Superscoopers really need a specific kind of water supply, like a large lake and the drought is taking a toll on that.

The wind was supposed to shift from the west to the north, so the smoke may not be a good indicator of what’s going on.
