Just Say No!!!

Hipparchia discovered that Jeff Miller (R-FL01) is running a poll on the left sidebar of his official website on drilling in the Gulf of Mexico.  Please go over and say NO!  The sea turtles, dolphins, greedy real estate speculators, and US Military will thank you.

Despite being the Congresscritter for the Florida Panhandle he doesn’t mention that leasing the area off the Panhandle will

  • Produce no results at all for at least a decade;
  • Oil companies are under no obligation to sell anything found to the US;
  • The sight of oil platforms reduces the value of coastal property, and endangers the area’s tourism attractiveness;
  • The presence of oil platforms will bar the military from using the area for training and testing missions, endangering the status of Eglin Air Force Base;
  • Another visit by an Opal or Ivan will guarantee an oil spill, as happened after Katrina.

Drilling in the Gulf, if the most optimistic of estimates is true and the oil is sold in the US, will not affect the price of gas by more than a few cents a gallon. Properly inflating your tires and performing routine maintenance on your vehicle is more that twice as effective as the drilling at reducing your cost of gas, and you can start saving money immediately, ask any mechanic.

thanks for helping to spread the word. 6 votes so far, and judging by the percentages, they’re all NO votes. way cool, you have smart readers.

I left a comment over at the Pensacola Beach Blog letting John know what was going on and one of the feeds linked to me grabs everything I categorized as Florida, so maybe we can get the word out.

i don’t know how long the poll has been up, haven’t visited his site in the past couple of weeks. hope it stays there long enough to get significant hits.

I try to forget he exists, as he is universally annoying and generally acts like the coast is of no concern to him.

…since I just love these on-line polls, I made sure to go on over and cast my vote, but I noticed that (aside from the usual absurdity of the his basic poll premise and the fact that hosting the poll on his own site is yielding the expected results) he seems to be somewhat behind the curve on this whole gas price thing. Could it be that the Honorable Mr. Miller of Florida is one of those Republican Congresscritters that has been so wrapped up in speaking to handfuls of tourists on the House floor during the August recess that he has failed to notice that the very failure of his effort to force the House to vote on offshore drilling has resulted in a $30/barrel reduction in oil price and a $0.15/gallon decline in gasoline price?

One is forced to wonder sometimes what fills Republican heads instead of brains (supply your own answer here_________)…

What was critical at $4.05/gallon, is less so at the price today, which has finally caught up with the national trend and dropped to $3.69. Our prices stayed up after other people reported drops, but it has been coming down like crazy in the last five days.

Chinese demand is way down because they have shut down factories and forced people to park their cars until after the Olympics to reduce pollution. Americans have been cutting back because gas was so expensive. It went up too far, too fast not to affect demand.

These guys are looking for anything to run on, and decided on drilling. It’s stupid, but it’s all they have.

thanks, jack.
