It will be of no consolation, but at 9:51 pm PST outside my door it is 20° and will probably be somewhere between 5° and 10° by sunrise. Of course, I’m supposed to expect that sort of thing…
I must confess that it has been interesting telling my first-born in Savannah that the high temperature today at 4500 ft. ASL here in snowy Central Orygun was higher than it was on the Georgia coast. That’s why we call it Global Climate Change…
Actually, it is bad news in Fairbanks, because even a minor freeze-thaw-freeze cycle can cause a lot of damage that can’t be seen to until the true spring. It also doesn’t bode well for the Iditarod.
Looking at the local weather the records lately have all been since 2000, both highs and lows. It’s just weird.
Your first-born will be freezing in Savannah, because they don’t have the insulation or furnaces necessary for these temperatures, but she is probably better prepared than most with clothes.

Be very glad you weren’t in Chicago yesterday. The high was -2F and the low was -24F. And that’s not including the wind chill. Was a treacherous walk from the train station to the office.
The weather guy on the news was muttering something about La Nina and El Nino, but I too think climate change has more to do with the extremes.
You guys are both about 1000+ miles North of me [Indianapolis is almost exactly 1000 miles due North] and don’t have to put up with hurricanes. There was an implied trade off, i.e. hurricanes for no winter. It’s not just the cold, we’ve also had too much rain, while Northeast of us there is a drought.

Yep. Climate is messed up all over. We only just had 2 days over 30C last week, and they predict one next week. *shrug* Historically, most of the 2nd half of Jan and most of Feb were over 30C. When Lady Min was here in Feb ’06, it rained most of the time and was cold. It even snowed one night (though we were up in the hills, still… the locals said it never snowed in Feb before!)
This is the first normal winter (normal as in what I’ve known in my life time) we had here since 97′ or 98′.

For Fairbanks to get that warm in January, and based on the temperatures for recent Iditarods, there is no doubt in my mind that the Arctic is warming, which screws up everyone else. The air currents and ocean currents shift, which means different types of air masses everywhere.
We have a southerly wind again today, so it is warming slightly, but rain is forecast for tomorrow. It’s a mess.
Know what you mean, Frederick. My younger brother lives just East of Rochester, and he almost didn’t contract for plowing this year, as it has been money wasted for several years. The plowing contractors are earning their money this year.
