It’s Not Just People

CNN reports that Pet treats recalled because they may be contaminated:

(CNN) — PetSmart is recalling seven of its Grreat Choice dog biscuit products because they contain peanut products made by a company that has been linked to a salmonella outbreak in 43 states and Canada, the Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday.

If you handle the treats, you can be contaminated and pass the infection to your family.

This is what happens when everything gets centralized for the sake of efficiency and cost cutting – problems at a single plant can have a huge impact on the food supply. We are nickel and diming ourselves to death.

we dodged the bullet this time around. the dog hates hates hates all things peanut butter, and i’ve become spoiled by my local co-op, where i can get fresh-ground peanut butter [and almond butter too].

You can make it yourself at home. It’s just a tablespoon of peanut oil to a cup of roasted peanuts. Some people add a little a salt, and some add sugar, but I prefer it straight. All you need is a food processor or blender to chop and mix. If you want chunky, you just reserve some of the peanuts and course chop them and add them after blending the rest.

That’s how I made it overseas. You use the oil measure to control the consistency of the peanut butter. Any good vegetable oil will work if you can’t get peanut oil, but the taste is a bit different. I used olive oil in Europe.

i destroyed a couple of blenders that way, over the years. much more pleasant to stop at the store and flip the switch on their industrial strength grinder.

olive oil, that would be a different taste. i used vegetable oil, sometimes a little salt, never any sugar. i always wished i could have used peanut oil, but at the time you could only find peanut oil in gallon-sized containers, for fish fries. i love peanut butter, but even i couldn’t justify that, peanut oil being roughly the equivalent of liquid gold in price.

oh, and creamy all the way. when i bite into my peanut butter sandwich, i don’t want it to bite back.

Coffee grinders have become a lot more affordable and there’s always the two-brick option.

I buy a quart off of people who do a lot of deep frying and buy in 5 gallon containers. Peanut oil allows a hotter temperature which why people prefer to use it. Things cook faster and less oil soaks in.
