Another Peanut Recall

The State of Texas has closed a peanut processing plant in Plainview owned by the Peanut Corporation of America, and ordered everything produced at the plant recalled.

The plant has been operating since 2005, but hadn’t been inspected until after the recall at a PCA Georgia plant. Based on the description of conditions, the plant pretty much violated every law in place for a food processing plant.

Kryten, give up the pseudo-Texan-speak; don’t force me to do Aussie stereotypes… 🙂

It was at least two weeks ago, considerably before FDA responded to the most recent incidents, that I gave up peanuts and peanut products altogether. I am willing to wait. I am not willing to risk being that sick. Sitting at dinner, Stella and I came up with five (5) tainted food incidents in the past five years, and there may have been more that we forgot about. I certainly hope the new administration restaffs and revitalizes the FDA; they’re not doing their jobs, and people are dying as a result.

Fallenmonk had a good suggestion: he orders raw peanuts online from a place in Virginia, roasts them himself (which presumably kills any germs), and uses a blender or food processor to make his own PB. The recipe should be on one of the last half dozen posts on his site.

It only took them a little over 4 years to check to see if things were sanitary. They were creating jobs, so no need to worry about whether they were poisoning the nation. 😡

The recipe is about a tablespoon of peanut oil to a cup and a half of roasted peanuts, and a coffee grinder with take care of the milling. I used to make it Europe, but had to substitute olive oil.

I can get peanuts by driving about 30 miles north and buying directly from a farmer.

All it takes is a little sanitation. When I worked in a canning factory the last job of the day was steam cleaning everything.

As near as I can tell, most of the time the problem is that there is no down time for cleaning, they are working at fewer facilities with three shifts. That doesn’t work well, as people should notice.

We need the FDA to work again.

OT: it’s not a Texan, Kryten has gone Loony Tunes and it was Yosemite Sam, which is much preferable to the Daffy Duck in other threads. 😉

Only good news is that the little tubes of peanut butter in my MRE’s is not affected. At least I don’t think so. They are heated up in a boiling water bath for several minutes to kill off organisms, that’s why they have a stated shelf life of five years and typically will last more.

Heh… Well, I’m fighting a PITA hosting service that is annoying me where I have been trying to upload my site all day! So going ‘Loony Tunes’ seemed an appropriate reaction. 😉

And what’s wrong with Daffy anyway? LOL (I also did Foghorn Leghorn, Marvin and a couple others. Strangely, I didn’t have the opportunity for Bugs! I also had a couple Porky Pig, Wile E Coyote, Taz and Tweety quotes ready to go!) LOL

Consider it a little social engineering experiment. 😉 😀

Don’t worry Steve, I do know there are decent Texans. 🙂 Sadly, they are generally overwhelmed by their big mouthed brethren.

In the earlier rations you mixed your own. There was a brick of ground peanuts and a packet of oil. You dumped them in your canteen cup and mixed them to use on the crackers. It tasted fine, but was a lot of work and a mess in the canteen cup.

I assume they are routing like crazy in Oz to get around fire related damage. The ‘Net was slower than normal yesterday as Microsoft is sending out its security patches to Win this week and Apple has some updates too.
