Delta Release

While alpha releases usually are somewhat functional, beta releases are recognized as buggy. IT people have a tendency to refer to really bad software as gamma releases. Well, this weekend I dealt with an aptly named delta release of a transportation provider.

There was a time when, if the initial flight was running late, the airline would hold the connecting flight. Now the connecting flight leaves early to ensure that passengers don’t make it. When fog delays a series of flights into a small airport with limited gates, why would anyone reschedule to ensure that twice as many planes are going to arrive as there are gates to handle them?

We had a very nice visit and the local weather cooperated, but every time I have to deal with airlines I become more convinced that I don’t ever want to board another plane. If you think TSA is a PITA for you individually, stand back and watch what they make people with babies go through: it is theater… of the absurd.

Oh, the FAA suggests that parents traveling with children caution the children not to make jokes about bombs. I would assume that whoever wrote that advice has never actually dealt with children, or they would know that even bringing it up will almost guarantee a problem.

Totally off topic, but I need to vent. WordPress sucks. They lost my handle. I have been Rook for over 6 years. Now, I am some 24 plus weird string of characters that makes no sense. And when I try to give myself my old nick name, it won’t let me, it instead foists upon me that God awful 24 plus werid string of characters.

Arrrgghhh!!!!!!!

Never mind. I finally figured it out. The profile page would not give me an option until I actually saved my profile first. Then the nickname option showed Rook.

Oh,Dog, I have been waiting for the implosion when you announced you were going to upgrade again. Now you suggest that you are changing platforms – you will never return. You have the worst luck with software changes of anyone I know.

But, yeah, WordPress requires an explicit save before it will show anything. It required three tries at my back-up WordPress.com blog before it stopped ID-ing me as “admin”.

I’ve never had a total meltdown, but I’ve had to tweak code a few times to get things the way I want them.

It’s nice to see you back in the hunt with more posts. It’s good therapy for those of us with anger issues.

And now you know why I stick with Blogger, despite its occasional meltdowns. I have to deal with software upgrades and hacking on code to make it work when I’m on the job. I don’t want to do it when I’m at home supposedly relaxing, too.

Oh, I’m not switching to WordPress. It’s just that on some blogs, I have to have a WordPress account to be able to comment. Also, Gravatar is now part of WordPress. So, I have to, you know, be part of the community.

If the change to Blogger 2.0 hadn’t wiped out my old site, I might be more in tune with that argument, Badtux. Every platform has problems, and it would be nice if things just worked, but we both know that isn’t going to happen.

Oh, OK, Rook, now I get it. You do have some of the worst luck with software, but the change to 2.7 did move things around and makes a lot of things that you rarely use harder to find.
