State Of The Union – SNAFU

Apparently the bar for any response to the SOTU is to be better than Bobby Jindal, which is more of a ha-ha.

I expect nothing from Obama, and that is exactly what I received from any of his speeches, based on what was in the text. That he is orator, I have no opinion about, because I have never heard more than snippets of any speech he has given. I have no interest in style, only substance. Politics isn’t theater; it is the deadly serious business of running a nation of over 300 million people.

Oh, yes, here’s the Full text of the State of the Union speech. It’s from McClatchy so it won’t get edited or vanish suddenly.

Here’s the NPR Transcript: GOP Response From Rep. Paul Ryan

KOLD credits this to CNN: Text of Tea Party response to Obama’s State of the Union featuring Rep. Michele Bachmann [she has no connection to Bachman-Turner Overdrive, OK?]

I was unable to locate a Democratic, centrist, or liberal response, or any notice to statements from anyone not living or working in Washington DC and the immediate environs, as we apparently don’t exist.

I don’t care about his birth certificate, but I would be interested in documented proof that Obama has successfully completed a high school-level course in American history.

This was not one of Obama’s speeches that inspire us in spite of ourselves. He sounded like a complete Republan. (Remember my rule: an “ic” for an “ic”.)

His announced intention to freeze non-defense discretionary spending for five (5) years is terrifying, considering what items will really be frozen. I’m not sure who this speech was aimed at, but if he intended to leave his liberal or even progressive base quaking, he succeeded, at least with me. OTOH, anyone who truly believed the report of the Catfood Commission should welcome his proposals with open arms.

Revenue bills shall originate in the House – he has minimal control of the budget or spending.

You may be right… OTOH, even the Dems may be politically skilled enough to reflect the coming hard times (and I’m convinced they are coming) onto a House reluctant to make any changes. Remember Clinton and Gingrich… how well did shutting down the gov’t work for the GOP back then?

whew. i’ve been a little bit worried that i was going to have to stop liking them.

well, i was skippng history class to blow up the chemistry lab, so i don’t care about either his birth certificate or his knowledge of history. i haven’t got any faith in hs willingness or ability to think, so knowledge, should he acquire it, would be useless anyway.

at this point, what he needs to do is just do whatever joe stiglitz, robert reich, and paul krugman tell him to do. or molly ivins.

your michele bachmann link doesn’t work [much like michele bachmann’s brain, probably].

I watched the speech on the White House website, and I enjoyed the live Q&A session with WH senior officials, as it turned out those officials were the wonks. You can still submit questions.

Cantor’s expressed desire to return spending levels to 2006 levels is down right frightening.
Someone should tell Bachmann that with the Bush administration the Iraq and Afghanistan wars were off the books. Now they are not. I can’t imagine having taken office and learning about the true debt figures. Geez. We need laws about stuff like this…

I did manage to listen to the speech while I was making dinner last night. It wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. Although that’s probably not saying much considering I’m from Illinois and we have pretty low expectations of what comes out of the mouths of our politicians.

Fact: no matter how often Obama surrenders, the Republicans are not going to cooperate in governing. They have already shifted into campaign mode for 2012 and that means showing the base that government doesn’t work. Obama handed the House to the Republicans, and he is on track to give them the White House and the Senate because he is ignorant and incompetent. The man would be out-of-step in a one man parade.

In their infinite wisdom the voters have elected a man who knows less about how to be President than Sarah Palin. He can talk about the theory but doesn’t know anything about the actual practice of being a politician. He is an empty suit who mouths Republican myths and dreams as if they were carved in stone.

Update: I found the CNN link for the Tea Party response, Hipparchia.
