Iditarod 2015 – Day 9

Iditarod 2015 Map
Sled DogThe Seaveys are battling it out for the lead with a man heading home. Being from Nome, Aaron’s team know by now they are heading home. Dallas is staying ahead by reducing rest time.

Two more scratches, Jan Stevens scratched at Huslia, and Katherine Keith at Unalakleet. Cindy Abbot now has the Red Lantern and is on the trail to Koyukuk. Cindy raced over 600 miles with a broken pelvis in her first attempt, so she’s not apt to give up.

Dallas has more than a 4 hour lead over his Dad and Aaron.

The Mushers in bold are former winners of the Iditarod, while italics indicates Yukon Quest winners. The numbers in parentheses are their Bib numbers. The small “R” indicates a total rookie, while the small “Q” indicates an Iditarod rookie who has completed a Yukon Quest.

These are the official standings. That means they are official, not that they are correct. Things jump around a lot as people decide to update the standings. This problem is especially bad in the back of the pack, as no one bothers to update those standings when the lead is changing.

This post will be updated during the day, and the map changed on all posts to reflect the current situation.

All posts on the Iditarod can be seen by selecting “Iditarod” from the Category box on the right sidebar or clicking on the Sled Dog graphic.

It’s amazing that Cindy can run this race at all with her health issues, isn’t it? She’s tough, and it looks like she’ll finish this year. Red Lantern or not, I’m in awe of anyone that tackles this race. Geez, I’m in good health, and I’m sure I couldn’t tackle it (even as much as I like dogs). I just wonder how she does it.

If Aliy keeps in the front now, we’ll have two ladies in the top 5. I like it. 🙂

Anyone who can stand on the runners of a sled for 600 miles is beyond tough, and then you add in slinging hay bales and dog food bags it is off the scale. She is alone at the end, but they had better not withdraw her if she is still running. The Quest will let people finish, but the Iditarod has a habit of dropping people at the end of the race.

Jessie and Aliy – 4 & 5.
