Weekend Update

Pluto

The good news is the New Horizon mission to the outer edge of the solar system.

Proving that some people have less than no class, we have people waving Confederate flags greeting President Barack Obama as he arrived at his hotel in Oklahoma. You would think that they would stay invisible after the bombing of the Federal building in Oklahoma City and the murders in South Carolina, but you can’t stop bigots from displaying their ignorance.

Just as soon as they identified the shooter in Tennessee as Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez, you knew this was going to be classed as ‘terrorism’. Heaven forfend that anyone notices that in this individual’s high school yearbook he notes the discrimination he is facing because of his name, and thinks this might be considered a reason for him not to feel thrilled about the US.

I actually don’t mind them waving the flag. It lets you know immediately what kind of people you’re dealing with — i.e., racist trash. That way you can deal with them (or not) accordingly.

I haven’t said anything about the Tennessee shooting because thus far I just don’t know enough to have anything to say that hasn’t already been said. All the usual suspects are using it to redouble their efforts to deport all Muslims to where they came from (America, in the case of Mohammad Youssuf Abdulazeez), and the usual “they died because they didn’t have guns” (nevermind that in a drive-by shooting like this, you wouldn’t have time to bring a gun to bear before being shot down), versus “they died because we have too *many* guns” that always happens when we have one of these things. None of which adds anything to understanding why this happened.

They have a Constitutionally protected right to be assholes in public, but you would think they would know better after what happened to the people who waved it for real 150 years ago.

I personally suspect ‘suicide by cop’. All of the recent mass shootings have been young men who just weren’t fitting in, and decided to make people sorry for not realizing how wonderful they were. If you can’t find any links to a wider group, they should classify the names and force the media to focus on the victims.

These guys don’t have the balls to actually go into battle while waving that flag, unlike their forefathers 150 years prior, so they smugly assume nothing will happen if they wave it around. Of course, there’s a lot of people who won’t hire or do business with racist assholes so they may be wrong about that…

Personally, I’m surprised there are not more mass shootings. This society is building up pressure like a steam boiler with the fire turned up to “Max”, between the 1% pulling the legs out from under the middle class, a growing immigrant class with no rights, and the destruction of public higher education turning college into just another way to put people into bonded servitude for the rest of their life with non-dischargeable debts. Throw in massive amounts of guns and massive amounts of violent propaganda and only running the world’s most fearsome police state, with more people behind bars both in absolute number and as a percentage than any other state on the planet, has kept the lid on it so far. I’m not sure how long that can continue though. We’re already seeing steam coming out of the seams, it’s only a matter of time before the boiler bursts unless something is done to remove the pressure…

The kids today are certainly getting screwed over. When I graduated from high school you could get a decent job, hell, you could live on the minimum wage. Over the summer between semesters I made enough money to cover all of my spending money for a year, and got scholarships to cover the cost of college. Today kids don’t have those advantages.

There are a lot of young people today who really have no way out poverty. The US is coming apart.
