This & That

Badtux checked and reports that the hack doesn’t affect Wranglers, only Grand Cherokees. The Wranglers have a firewall built in, but the Grand Cherokees don’t.

Trump went to annoy people in Laredo, Texas, saying he was invited. He didn’t seem to notice that Laredo has a low crime rate for cities its size, and local officials have been really annoyed by politicians who keep telling the world that the US-Mexico border is overrun with violent crime on the US side.

A border fence or wall isn’t going to work. The people who want to cross will either dig a tunnel or use ladders. Building a wall is pork-barrel – a political pay-off to a campaign contributor. It’s a waste of taxes.

Another mass shooting. This time at a movie theater in Lafayette, Louisiana. So far only three have died, one of them the shooter, and seven nine people were wounded. The shooter was a 58 59-year-old white male whose identity is known but being withheld by authorities. Since there is no speculation about motive, he must be a Christian. [I should know better than to trust CNN ‘reporting’]

Since he’s running for the GOP Presidential nomination, Louisiana governor Bobby Jindal rushed to the scene for free media exposure.

Louisiana is an open carry state, where it’s quite legal to open carry a weapon into a theater. Probably there was at least one or two people inside the theater who were concealed carrying too, this being Louisiana. That all sure stopped that shooting spree in its tracks, eh?

He bought the gun in an Alabama pawn shop, so you can forget any realistic background check, but you are right, in Lafayette you know damn well that there armed people in the theater, but probably not in that particular screen because it was a Rom-Com making the audience primarily female.

I checked with the Louisiana State Police and 25% of their concealed carry permits are to women. Still, you’re likely right, this particular movie wouldn’t have attracted the kind of people who do concealed carry. A college student and a musician were the two killed, and neither are age groups or constituencies typically doing concealed carry of anything except a couple of joints or a flask.

I spent five years of my professional life providing actually quite interesting database support, constructing our own genealogy s/w for a health research project in which the target group was… the entire population of the city of Laredo, late 19th century to present. I could have told Donald he wouldn’t find very many of his rapists and other felons living there, but Donald is not given to listening to anyone. About anything. [/sigh]

Yeah, Badtux, the majority of the people in the South will have a shotgun or rifle in the house, but I sincerely doubt that the number of people who normally carry a gun is all that high down here anywhere the streets are paved. The audience for a ‘chick flick’ is not apt to be packing.

Laredo is small enough and stable enough that people know their neighbors. Given the number of people in town who would know victims and suspects it is extremely hard to get away with anything.
