Software Update

There was a security update to WordPress so I had to update the site. If you notice something weird I would appreciate it if you let me know.

I gave up on running a modified WordPress for the jeep club website and found a theme that was close enough to okay to work without revision. All the updates just completely walloped me, especially when a PHP update broke WordPress and required a hand edit of WordPress just to update to a version of WordPress that’d work with that PHP update.

My host allows me to control the system environment, so I can test updates before migrating to them, but sooner or later something in my template is going to be broken by a new version of WP. WP wants to automatically update for me, but I have no intention of giving anyone the FTP passwords to my account.

FTP passwords to your account? That’s odd. WP didn’t need the FTP passwords for my account to auto-update. Unfortunately, auto-update doesn’t seem to always work, at which point when I log in I get the message that WordPress wants to update, click here.

The PHP update was alas required because there was an exploit in PHP itself. SIGH.

It is because I use the software on my own site rather than linking/redirecting to WordPress.com.

The problem with using open source software that needs other open source software it that it has QA only slightly better than M$ 😉

I’m running WordPress on my own server. The only permissions it needs are write permission to the directory it lives in, it doesn’t need my FTP password. Of course, this also allows hackers to change it anyway they want, but …

I have very limited write permissions on my site because of some earlier attempts to hack my blog. About the only thing others can write to my blog without FTP are comments.
