I didn’t get the Internet back until 3PM CST yesterday, which was annoying, but I had some handyman stuff to keep me busy. The annoying part is that they charge me whether I have access or not.
Badtux points out that entering the US without all of the proper paperwork is not a crime. It is a violation of rules, and will remain that way unless some ignorant Congresscritters make it a crime which will cost the Federal government billions of dollars every year. If undocumented aliens are picked up, they aren’t charged with a crime, they have, at most, a hearing before an administrative judge, and are sent back to their country of origin. Badtux provides chapter and verse of the US Code.
The fact that it isn’t a crime is why local law enforcement is unhappy with helping the Feds. First off, local law enforcement is not authorized to enforce Federal regulations. State laws don’t allow you to hold people in jail for unlimited periods. You have to charge people or release them within a given time period. If they are charged with a violation of state law they are entitled to an attorney and a bail hearing. If they can make bail. you have to release them. The Feds want you to hold people until they get around to dropping by, but they aren’t paying the bills, and they aren’t facing a lawsuit if the individual actually has all of the paper work.
Working with the Feds is a Win/Lose – the Feds get the money and credit if it’s a good bust, but the locals get the blame and the bills if it’s a disaster. I had a budget when I was in law enforcement, and I had enough problems protecting it from interdepartmental raids, I sure as hell wasn’t interested in wasting anything on the Feds. If they wanted to pony up more cash, then we could have talked, but if they did, local politicians would have cut their share so they could cut taxes. That was the way things worked during Reagan – no reduction in requirements, just shifting funding responsibilities to another layer of government.

It’s not just state laws, it’s the Constitution as a whole that requires providing a lawyer and bail hearing and right to habeas corpus etc. for people accused of a crime and jailed pending trial. That’s the kind of thing that the immigration code deliberately tip-toes around by classifying deportation as an administrative action rather than a punishment for a crime.
The Feds have a program to reimburse local police departments for holding illegal aliens for them (illegal alien in the legal term of the law — an alien, authorized or unauthorized, who has committed a felony offense), but the limitations on it are so ridiculous that most police departments get only a trivial sum from it. Most aliens that the Feds put an immigration hold on don’t qualify for reimbursement. Yeah, just what I want, someone cluttering my jail at local taxpayer expense while the Feds get their act together. (Cue eye roll).
In reality [I taught laws of arrest in my departments in-service training] it never gets to the level of the US Constitution because the state constitutions and laws prohibit what the Feds do. If a person isn’t free to leave they are arrested and you had better have a crime to go along with that arrest. No crime, the arrest is illegal and the LEO is in trouble. Undocumented immigrants have violated Federal regulations, but not committed a crime, so the Feds have to provide local LEOs cover to deal with them. Money is a big deal with local governments, but liability is next. CBP [it was INS in my day] has powers and immunity that aren’t available to state and local law enforcement.
We get into this jurisdictional thing after hurricanes when LEOs from the neighboring states come in to back up local LEOs. The usual fix is to have the sheriff deputize them so they can function in the affected state. Jurisdiction is more important than most people understand. If you have MVA in Florida, the ownership of the road or street determines who takes the report, i.e. troopers for state roads, deputies for county roads, or local police for city streets. In my area it may also be the Air Force Security Police for some roads.
Too many jurisdictions are having to hand out early releases because of jail over -crowding, and Feds want women and children held with no associated crime, not going to happen, and that is the real reason behind the support in many places for sanctuary cities. We don’t have the homeless shelters we need, and now cities are expected to find places for the agricultural and food service workers in their jurisdiction until the Feds figure out what to do with them. That’s BS. Show us the money, Donald! Let’s see the cash up front before we even start talking.
We had 20K SEA refugees dropped on Okaloosa County after the end of Vietnam, and the Feds damn sure didn’t cover all of the costs. So, let’s see the cash, no checks, before you make local governments responsible for any Federal functions.

She earned the nicknamed the Queen of Carbon for her work. She was the first woman to become a full professor at M.I.T. in 1968, and she worked very hard to ensure that she would not be the last! 😀 Known as Millie to her friends & colleagues, she helped many women become Professors @ M.I.T.
A very sad day. Rest in peace Millie. You have earned it.
I’m working a post about the flag thing. You do know that it is the flag of the Netherlands with the red stripe moved to the bottom. Russia didn’t an actual national flag when Peter the Great was having ships built in the Netherlands at the end of the 17th century, so he used what was available. The Tsars had their standard with their black double-headed eagle on a gold background, but he couldn’t be on all of the ships. It was really a civil merchants’ flag but morphed into the national flag.
Someone suggested that maybe a vendor got confused, but everyone knows it’s ‘red, white & blue’, not ‘white, blue & red’. There are too many US flags of that size available for a vender to have screwed up and ordered Russian flags. The Chinese know the difference.
The CPAC natives are restless and don’t like some of what they were being given. Russia was always going to be a hard sell and they certainly weren’t happy about “Milo”.
Priebus talking to the FBI, no matter why, is a serious violation of protocols in place and monitored since before Nixon. Tricky Dick used the CIA to pressure the FBI on Watergate, and that was part of the reason he had to resign.
SCROTUS has banned some media companies from White House briefings for reporting on that. This is not going to be pretty. If Preibus had suggested that the FBI stop investigating the Russian connection, that might have resulted in obstruction of justice charges.
She lived through the Depression, World War II, etc. but she got to see and helped to create some great things. They should name one of the Trappist planets after her.

My Bad 🙁 I assumed they were fed up with the Putin love in, but they were just ignorant. I’ll have to add an update to my post tomorrow. It’s as bad as the guy who just gunned down a couple of Indian techies because he thought they were Muslims. If you’re going to hate at least know who you’re hating and have some semblance of a reason why.
My Dad did not climb into the plexiglas nose of a B-24 to bomb Nazis in World War II, so they could be holding meetings in DC in the lives of his children. I didn’t put in 3500 hours aboard recce aircraft watching the Soviets, so the SCROTUS could embrace them in their new form. Why do people continue to make the same mistakes that always lead to bad endings?

The CPAC Russian flag story reminds me of an important point: These people, the heart and core of the conservative movement, are *STUPID*. For the most part. The bright staffer who realized what was happening and ordering the confiscation of the flags being one of the few who aren’t. And the reason that’s important is because stupid don’t fascist so good.
In a way, that’s a hopeful sign about the future of the country…

The American Conservative Union invited Milo to speak with his sole credentials that he says and writes things that liberals don’t like. Then they have to uninvite him when it is pointed out that among those things is advocating sex with minors. Their sole philosophy is opposing whatever they are told liberals support. This is no way to live your life – waiting for someone else to make their decision on an issue and then opposing it without even looking at how you’ll be affected.
One of the reasons Harward turned down the offer to replace Flynn was because he wanted McFarland out (for her advocacy of “Israeli-style” racial profiling, stating that Putin deserved a Nobel Prize & other reasons). Trumper wouldn’t allow it, nor allow Harward to appoint his own staff. Apparently, Trumper likes McFarland because she’s a regular on Fox News! Well, that’s a great reason to appoint someone to a senior position! I’m surprised he hasn’t given jobs to all the Fox staff!

In the US you would be out the door and possibly on your way to court if you released that kind of information without a court order. Almost everyone in the US complains about the IRS, but the IRS never responds. It is a waste of time to respond to individual claims other than the standard “No comment.”
It is becoming obvious that the majority of the people working at the White House think their bosses are all asses. They are probably the relatives of Trump’s associates, and don’t really need the job. Screwing with people is what they do. At least while they are working at the White House they aren’t out killing homeless people like too many of their ‘friends’.
The DHS analysts don’t think the information that the White House wants included is credible. The only ‘problem’ with the report is that it corresponds with reality, not SCROTUS’s delusions.
The media should have stopped talking to her after her ‘alternate facts’ comment. Being disbarred isn’t as good as being behind bars, but you take what you can get. 😈

Reading Rousso’s article I think I see a connection to Mem Fox’e detention – both were coming to the US to do what might be considered, if you were weak minded, a ‘job’. It is a bit of an understatement to say that ASD or NSA are large energy users. In a temperate climate they don’t need any heating beyond what comes off their equipment. Rochester institute of Technology in Rochester, New York uses the waste heat from their computer center to replace the furnace in an entire building. Considering the probable size of the ASD facility and the need to maintain ‘comfort zone’ temperatures, they definitely would need backup power during a heatwave, which argues for local solar power to provide that need.

I got a letter from my mobile phone company (ACN) that they are cancelling all mobile services @ end of March. They sent me a sim for *a very special deal* with Vodaphone for a 24mth plan w/1 GB data/30 days prepaid that works out at $28/mth! What a bloody joke!
I also got a letter from the NBN Co. that NBN is available at my address w/ an ID code that I can give to my ISP to make things easy.
Got an email from my ISP that my 12 mth contract is about to expire. Also, my landline phone plan is with a different company.
Oh well. The good news is that NBN is available, the downside is that if it’s copper, it may only be slightly better than what I have, depending how far away from the fiber node I am. Pretty sure we are on copper from node to premises because there hasn’t been any work in this street. Still, maybe I’ll get lucky. Good news is I can cancel my landline phone @ save $30/mth on line rental (as it’s not needed for NBN).
The BIG problem is that I will have no idea of my actual line speed until the NBN is connected! 🙁 So, I don’t know which tier to go for (if speed is slow, the higher/faster/more expensive tiers will be a waste of money!) Tier 1: 12 Mbps, T 2/3: 25 Mbps, T4: 50 Mbps, T5: 100 Mbps. The gotcha is that they know NBN sux & only guarantee 50% of rated speed @ T1-3, & 25% T4-5! What a f*kin joke!
Best thing is to hope someone nearby has NBN with the company so they can give me an idea. Because I can’t just change a 12 mth contract. Have to cancel & payout the remainder. 🙁

My recent problems were all related to line resistance in the coax coming into the house from the pole. The tech replaced all of the connectors after taking a reading from the mainline at the house. I went from average download speeds of 7.8Mbps back to the above 15Mbps that I was paying for [with a $75 service charge]. There is one more thing I will do if things drop off – run a new line from the house connection to the modem with no intermediate connectors. There are too many connectors in the current line. Copper corrodes, whether it’s twisted pair or coax. That’s one of the big selling points on fiber – reduced maintenance after installation.
The no landline requirement is good, but paying for service they already know won’t be delivered really sucks, as do two year plans when you don’t know if the company is worth anything.
Put your options on a dart board and trust your luck is probably the best you can hope for if you can’t locate a current NBN customer.

Nobody else does! What a surprise!)

One of the problems is major congestion because they doubled the distance between fiber nodes to cut costs! Typical.

I’m getting 15/2Mbps + 1TB/month for $63, no Static IP but they offer VOIP phone service for $10/month which is worthless for service calls when the ‘Net is down.

I was finally able to devote some time to my blog the which has been on hold for awhile.
1. Got my ‘kryten42.com’ domain transferred to WebHostFace & Nameservers/FTP/Mail config’d.
2. Learned the new cPanel (been a few years since I used it! I like the new one! :D)
3. Set up all security, mail, sub-domains & records.
4. Installed WPMU (of course changed ALL defaults!)
The new Softaculous makes this a breeze! Almost too easy. LOL
5. Set up full daily rotating site backups (7, a week’s worth) before I start messing around! 😉 😀
6. Set up full weekly & monthly backups w/ R1soft local & offsite (incl. separate MySQL backups).
7. Installed basic theme & plugins (mostly security related).
8. Some other tedious stuff! LOL
Still waiting for my SSL certificate! So no HTTPS for now.
Feeling pretty good about it all so far. 🙂 It’s nice to be moving ahead finally!

She was the only state attorney general who didn’t go for the give-away settlement negotiated by the Obama Justice Department with the big banks and instead negotiated a bigger settlement for California. I’m quite happy that she’s my Senator now. She’s not running for president in four years though, she’s nowhere near where she needs to be for that and she knows it. Elizabeth Warren, on the other hand… ooh, that would make me smile.

In theory I may get faster speeds! Won’t know until I get it. And from reports, it will probably vary quite a bit day-to-day. And many report serious dropouts & loss of connectivity when the Nodes become seriously congested (due to both distance between nodes & over-provisioning!) 🙁 Also, the NBN Co. charge outrageous prices for the back-haul bandwidth! Something like $17k/Mth for 1 Gb! So many ISP’s are just buying the minimum they can get away with! Which is why the performance guarantee is a joke! If I get the minimum of 25%, you’ll be better off than I will. *shrug*

It was a stupid lie – one of the meetings was in Sessions’ Senate office which is documented a dozen ways because of security
There are a half dozen or so senior members of the SCOTUS’s team who have ties to Russia and Drumpf was saying nice things about Vlad during the campaign, so a lot of wires were tripped. The problem is that the current occupants of the White House aren’t smart enough to create plausible deniability,. They think their denying of reality should be assumed to be plausible based on the alternate facts doctrine.
