Iditarod 2017 – Day 13 et fini

Iditarod 2017 MapSled DogZoya and her ‘rescues, rejects, and runts’ made it into Nome at 10:25AM CDT.

Alan Eischens left White Mountain at about the same time with all 16 still in harness. Having two intact teams in Nome is probably a unique event.

Cindy Abbott paused and got the Red Lantern back.

The race ended at 2:57:31PM AKDT [5:57:31PM CDT] when Cindy Abbott’s team passed under the Burled Arch in Nome with a race time of 12 days 2 hours 57 minutes 31 seconds. Cindy joins Ellen Halverson with having earned two Red Lanterns. Alan Eischens had arrived about 20 minutes earlier with all 16 of his puppies in harness.

The Mushers in bold are former winners of the Iditarod, while italics indicates Yukon Quest winners. The numbers in parentheses are their Bib numbers. The small “R” indicates a total rookie, while the small “Q” indicates an Iditarod rookie who has completed a Yukon Quest.

These are the official standings. That means they are official, not that they are correct. Things jump around a lot as people decide to update the standings. This problem is especially bad in the back of the pack, as no one bothers to update those standings when the lead is changing.

This post will be updated during the day, and the map changed on all posts to reflect the current situation.

All posts on the Iditarod can be seen by selecting “Iditarod” from the Category box on the right sidebar or clicking on the Sled Dog graphic.

Great news for Zoya. I know she came in with a healthy and happy team, too. It’s just what she does.

Well, it looks like Cindy may be far enough behind to be fairly certain of the Red Lantern again. Which is okay, at least she will be able to finish again. With her health issues, it’s something of a minor miracle that the lady can finish at all. I consider myself to be fairly healthy (i.e., no major known health issues), but I couldn’t do what she does.

Kristy and Anna came in together as usual. I often wonder if they go: “I’ll go in first this year, you go in first next year.” They could switch numbers and no one would be able to tell them apart (except their dogs). lol.

The Berington sisters enjoy messing with people. You would have to know them really well to know who is actually on the runners, because they train their teams together.

I didn’t want to single out Zoya too much so I wouldn’t feel like I jinxed her if she had to scratch.

For Cindy finishing is important. More people have climbed Mount Everest than finished an Iditarod and she has managed to do both. Tough lady…
