Another Display Of Ignorance

If you have been in US scouting, the military, or a military school there are four bugle calls that you will recognize because you heard them every day:

Reveille – wake up and raise the flag.

Retreat – return to base, the duty day is done, and the flag will be lowered.

To the Color – a salute to the flag as it is being lowered.

Taps – lights out or the final salute to a fallen comrade.

The retreat ceremony predates the Revolution and originally used drum rolls until bugles became common in the mid 19th century. The practice has been traced back to James II of Britain in 1690.

Robin Williams was a comedian and donated his talent to USO shows for deployed troops. He started a show a little early and was interrupted by the retreat ceremony. He wasn’t sure what was going on, but as a professional he took his clues from his audience and stood quietly until the the ceremony was over. Then he asked what had happened.

Donald Trump is a joke who happens to be the Commander in Chief of the armed forces of the United States. When his interview with Sean Hannity at an Air National Guard base in Pennsylvania was interrupted by the retreat ceremony, Trump ignored the reaction of the military audience and continued to talk. That is not how you react when you claim to respect the flag and the military. Trump went to a military school, so he has heard the bugle calls before.

Respect is for the little people, not for Lord Trump.

And yet a third of people still support him after such obvious hypocrisy. It is depressing to think that there are this many people who can be fooled by him.

So Trump is an embarassment, but what else was on offer? Someone who told stupid lies about taking enemy fire – and kept on lying when caught out. Does that count as “stolen honour”?

Trump will likely do less damage than Reagan and George W. and possibly less than Bill or Obama. Do the obligatory hate sessions and the neo-McCarthyite hysteria serve any useful purpose?

He is moving towards starting a nuclear war, which is generally considered a very bad thing, and he is displaying rather obvious indications of senile dementia.

Nahhh. He will do anything to get out of paying his debts! Granted, It’s a bit extreme… But he is a greedy moronic narcissistic sociopath after all.

He realizes he can’t fake it much longer and is hitting out at everything. He thought he could do whatever he wanted and expected underlings to take care of the details, and found out what CEOs with active boards realize, you occasionally have to suck up to other people and he just can’t do it. His business is tiny. There is a lot of money involved, but it doesn’t take that many employees. Most of the actual work is done by contractors. He doesn’t have an in house accountant or lawyer, the work is all done by contractors.

Thanks for the education on the bugle calls. Not having been a part of the military, I knew about Reveille and Taps, but had no idea about the others. I probably should have known about it, but I didn’t. If I’m ever on a military base, now I’ll know what’s happening! Appreciate it.

In other news, I see your governor has declared a state of emergency before the Spencer speech at the university.

8 Bryan { 10.17.17 at 4:38 pm }

It has to be rather obvious for our governor to figure it out [if doesn’t involve scamming Medicaid/Medicare]. The University won’t stop the event because of free speech, but local law enforcement is used to frat parties and football games, not Nazis and the antifa. The University and local officials had to have asked for the assistance.

Flags, drum beats, and bugle calls were how the military communicated before radio. If you have never been around the military there is no reason for you to know, but Trump has claimed knowledge that he just doesn’t have.

In other, other news, I just saw our weather report and we’re having the first frost of the year tonight. Well, just dang. Now I’ve got to get all my plants in tonight. I had looked earlier in the week, and it was calling for temps above 39 for the next couple of weeks. Grrrr…

I think most Governors must take an IQ test before they are allowed to run, and they’re eliminated if they rise above a certain level. Because they might do pesky things, like complex thinking. No telling what they might get up to with a few original thoughts.

It was 60° overnight down here. I’m going to have to use the heater for my shower and put on socks for a day or so. Not quite ready to light the gas.

Stay warm. The wind in the mountains cut right through you.

We have Dec/Jan weather now. 31C today. Relative humidity is 36%, so not too bad. And a stiff breeze about 20km/hr with gusts helps. Put washing out, was dry in 20 min’s! One good thing about a hot day. 😆

The bureau says there’s a 90% chance of rain in my area! But not a cloud in sight! Though we have a saying here “If you don’t like the weather, wait an hour!” It changes quickly here. 😀

Good luck guys! The weather is insane & all but unpredictable these days!

That is well above average for your Spring. That’s the kind of temperature I left behind in September.

Well, there’s nothing for it but to hope that the bathroom is finally warm. I’m a bit too gamey to put off a shower.

13 Kryten42 { 10.17.17 at 9:49 pm }

Well, that’s the other good thing. High temp & relatively low humidity means I dry fast also! My hair dried in 20 min’s too (I have a lot with a decent pony tail combed back from the brow). I have a Doc’s appointment shortly. Have to be squeaky clean for the Doc! It’s my annual major checkup & pathology crap for the next week. What fun. 🙄

My electricity bill over our long winter was about $130/mth. Now that I’ve not used heating for about 2 months, it’s back to a reasonable $68/mth. Both are with a 42% “pay on time discount”! The discount only covers usage, not “the service to the property” charge of about $36/Mth! Damned crooks. Though, they did just give me a $50 “loyalty credit” for being with them a year. Apparently they give everyone the credit after a year. Woo… hoo. *sigh* Most people don’t seem to get that if an energy supplier can offer 42% discount, obviously people are being screwed! It was a standard 32%, but I know the trick… I changed supplier & they called & offered an extra 10%! We have a 10 weekday cooling off period before changeover. Also, the companies have to guarantee price & discounts for 2 years. So every 2 years, we do the ring-around dance! The LNP is trying to scrap that 2 yr guarantee of course! Bastards that they are! Amazing how many people don’t get it or do it. *shrug*

Drying hair is the least of my problems – it’s all on my face with nothing under my hat.

In each area of Florida there is a local monopoly which you attach to or sit in the dark. Customers have zero bargaining power. If you install solar you have to be connected to the grid and can’t use the power if the grid is down. Somewhere along the way all of that Republican talk about competition has disappeared.

You have a much better deal while it still exists.

Haven’t had to run the heater yet, but now it’s getting cool enough that I don’t have to open the windows in the evening to cool the house down. A nice change from the brutal heat we had this summer, a brutal heat that is directly related to all the fires burning much of California. Let’s just hope we get some *rain* soon….

16 Bryan { 10.20.17 at 10:55 am }

Having lived in Monterey twice in the late 60s and early 70s, I just can’t imagine being in the Bay area without long sleeves and a jacket. At that time 70° would have seemed like a heat wave in San Francisco.

It is a bit weird sleeping without the sound of the air conditioner, but I can deal with it, especially when I get my electricity bill.

I wish I could ship at least half of the rain I’ve gotten the last couple of years. It is turning the succulents into mush.
