The old fan wobbled, was noisy, and a total pain to clean. I had to kill the power to take down the old one and replace it and there always seemed to be a cat on the ladder to see what I was doing.

What harm could a fuzzy ball on the end of a elastic string do? I reinforced the box to take the new fan, after the sagging caused by the old one. The string was taped to the bottom of the blade to come off if one of the cats jumped and caught it.

I had the power back on, which meant the air conditioner was putting out cold air again. I was minding my own business when a small gray cat decided the quickest and easiest path to that ball was to jump off my back.

It hurt. It still hurts.
