Steve, don’t regret not getting called, it isn’t the barrels of laughs some people would have you believe. It’s a young person’s occupation, which is why I get out of sorts when they start sending people over 40, often well over 40, to a combat zone. They aren’t a help when the bullets fly, they are another concern that you don’t need.

They could have gotten all the people they needed if they had made the call, but they didn’t. If they had gone in with 500K and clamped down, we might not be in the trouble we have today, but you can’t know for sure, so there’s no point in discussing it outside of war game circles.

I only bring up a draft because that is the only way the military will get the recruits it needs and the Bush girls would be sitting on the “group W bench” [was Arlo psychic?].

Karen, I think he’s taken himself out of the running by his hard right turn. As I said over at the Grumpy Forester, the Republicans are bleeding their centrists and moderates which will cost them for a very long time.

I Hates McLame…he’s sold his soul to the become the very Devil (or so he thinks) – but I agree that if he keeps talking like this they ought to just commit him in one of those nice padded rooms for the truly delusional (don’t wanna let him harm himself or others…now do we!)

The Shrubbery has two healthy draft-age daughters, and any draft today would surely include women. Of course, The Shrubbery managed to get out of it, and out of his commitment to the Guard, too…

Sometimes I regret that I did not serve. But unlike a certain preznit, I have never refused or skipped out on any solemn obligation my country has asked of me. If I had to choose between physical disabilities like mine and moral disabilities like his… I’d take mine, thank you very much; the other kind are more painful than I could bear.

I don’t see any other way of doing what he wants, and I don’t see a draft as viable. The Shrubbery might have gotten away with it in 2002, but not today.
