I found out later that the language school and airborne were both “volunteer only” assignments. Strange that no one mentioned it at the time.

When my kid enlisted and told me of all their wonderful promises, I informed him that he had made a treaty with the same folks who made treaties with the Indians, and that he would be served the same way.

The day after he arrived for active duty, he called to tell me they had already broken their contract. Quel surprise!
