I have relatives dealing with some form of this in every part of the country!! When are they going to tell us about it…or will they?

I would guess that the level of damage caused by the melamine is a result of how much cyanuric acid is present to create the crystals. Apparently cyanuric acid is part of the process to break down the melamine and could be present because of the action of microbes digesting melamine as well as directly included with the melamine scrap.
