My worry, speaking from experience, is the relatively low land of Oman, and the storm surge in an enclosed waterway like the Gulf of Oman. It isn’t the wind, as bad as that is, it’s the water that causes most of the damage. Oman has no way of dealing with the water, because you don’t put storm sewers in a desert.
The intensity dropped before landfall, so the damage won’t be as bad as anticipated two days ago when Gonu had the 150 knot winds, but it will be a long time before utilities are re-established.
