I get a feeling that Brown realizes the danger that Blair did not of dealing with someone as incurious and shallow as the Shrubbery. The difference in the political systems produce very different results. The British system requires a long apprenticeship, where the American system does not.

Quite literally, anyone can become President who was born in the US and lived past the age of 35 with no training or qualifications for the job, as long as they can attract money. This obviously gives the people with wealth a huge advantage.

I think Brown is correct in distancing Britain from our current mess and waiting to see what happens in 2008.

Hmm I never understood Blair’s total suport for Bush. He should have done what a previous Labour PM, Harol Wilson did when LBJ gave the UK an invite to join the Vietnam party (I to,d him to get stuffed).

Brown is a very different beast to Blair. Despite assurances that the “special relationship” will be as strong (and just as one way), I get the deeling that Brown will slowly distance the UK from the US.

I’m wondering if they have printed on the lining: “If found, please return to 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, Washington, DC.”

No, they pin that note to his sleeve, where it serves the dual purpose of identifying him if found wandering dazed and confused without his handlers, and keeping him from wiping his nose on it in public.
