I’ve seen the Canyon from 40,000 feet and from the bottom looking up, I’ll pass on the “glass bottomed bridge” version.

There’s nothing I miss about Mobile.

they are that. can't blame them, i suppose. life must be awfully black-and-white when all you've got to choose from is 1s and 0s. i love the other-world feeling of driving over bridges and through tunnels. for several years i commuted from here to mobile and back every day: 7 mile bridge over the bay, followed by the tunnel, then you get squirted out into downtown rush hour traffic. i miss it. aesthetically it's an abomination, and the prices are outrageous, so i probably won't do the skywalk on my trip to the grand canyon this winter. i'd happily pay the $25 to walk out to the end and look 4000 feet down, but i don't want to do all that other touristy stuff they package up with it.

The bridge across Pensacola Bay is 3 miles and it makes people nervous, not like the Coronado Bay bridge, but then you can barely feel the small tremors we occasionally have and we have hurricanes and barges on the Intercoastal Waterway to regularly test our bridges.

The Keys and the interstates bridges around New Orleans would definitely test a phobia although they aren’t very high.

There was a segment on CBS Sunday Morning many, many years ago about people who are too afraid to drive across the Mackinac Bridge in Michigan. It’s one of the longest bridges across water. They actually have people at the gates who are employed to take over driving for these people who are afraid to drive across the bridge because they found it was much safer than passing these folks through and then having them stop midway on the bridge, blocking everyone.

I distinctly remember this segment because I remember that bridge (my parents were from Michigan and we would visit relatives) and we would winter in Florida and going through the Keys was just one long scary bridge with a couple sandy palms to me.

I saw a report somewhere that I can’t find that mentioned that trucks have gotten heavier and bridges and roads are wearing out faster because of it.

Let’s blame it on Hummers and SUVs.
