Aqua Dots Can Kill

Because there isn’t enough for parents to worry about: Millions of toys recalled; contain ‘date rape’ drug

WASHINGTON (AP) — Millions of Chinese-made toys have been pulled from shelves in North America and Australia after scientists found they contain a chemical that converts into a powerful date rape drug when ingested. Two children in the U.S. and three in Australia were hospitalized after swallowing the beads.

In the United States, the toy goes by the name Aqua Dots, a highly popular holiday toy distributed by Toronto-based Spin Master Toys. They are called Bindeez in Australia, where they were named toy of the year at an industry function earlier this year.

The toy beads are sold in general merchandise stores and over the Internet for use in arts and crafts projects. They can be arranged into designs and fused together when sprayed with water.

Scientists say a chemical coating on the beads, when ingested, metabolizes into the so-called date rape drug gamma hydroxy butyrate. When eaten, the compound — made from common and easily available ingredients — can induce unconsciousness, seizures, drowsiness, coma and death.

Do they make anything in China that is safe for humans? Do they do any testing at all?

I feel certain that all Chinese tech manuals are translated by sixth graders in an English class, and I’m starting to believe that half the stuff coming in is the result of failed high school chemistry experiments.

Well…some bad toys are now coming in from Mexico.

Mattel recalls 155,000 Mexican-made toys. Mattel Inc, the world’s largest toymaker, has recalled 155,000 of its products made in Mexico over safety concerns, an official at the company told Reuters on Tuesday. – Reuters

I’ve been keeping track of a lot of the Chinese products that have proved to be toxic. I check now to see where stuff is made before I buy it and have realized that China has a hand in everything we eat, wear, and use.

And we can’t trust them.

I feel so safe.

That was on small parts as I remember, Jill, not poisonous materials, although I remember the radioactive wrought iron from my days in SoCal – wrought iron pieces that were made with scrapped radiation therapy equipment that had been shipped to Mexico by American hospitals who didn’t want to pay for proper disposal.

Actually, Ace, I think the end of China’s dominance will be a true valuation of their currency, which will make things too expensive for Mal-Wart.

Ellroon, I “trust” the Chinese to cut every corner with a view only to maximizing profits as that is what they learned from the Western companies they have been dealing with the longest.
