One of the problems with buying land in Costa Rica is, while the land is really cheap, you have to live there at least part of the year or the land reverts to the government under an absentee ownership law that a lot of Americans didn’t notice when they bought the land.
The law was in the deed paperwork of a couple of people I know who got burned, so they aren’t trying to hide it. The problem was that people needed land and there was a lot of empty land that belonged to foreigners. They didn’t want the people moving into the unspoiled wilderness areas, so they passed this law.
