The “local economy” has ponied up a lot of money to attract the convention and to stage it. I’ve heard that excuse for years, and never known it pay off. It is the same con used to get people to bid for the Olympics, which always loses money.

This is a meeting without a purpose, I have fought a long battle against them in every organization I’ve been in. There was a time when they made sense and actually decided something, but that time is long past.

Forty hours of work is not going to keep anyone off of food stamps or pay many bills.

On the other hand, think of all the business those conventions will produce–a lot of hotels, particularly out west, have begun to lay off staff since the demand for their services is so low. Anything that will bring tens of thousands of people to your area, even if only for a week, will be good for the local economy.

I think delegates have to sign some sort of agreement to go if they are selected, but it’s still a waste of resources.

As for protesting, I expect both side will set up ~~detention centers~~ “free speech zones” to keep naysayers away.

…the parties hold their conventions and the delegates go because it is reaffirmation of their status as Kool Kidz and nothing will stand in the way of their celebrating that important fact. I shan’t speculate as to why bloggers would attend…
