Actually, if they hadn’t put a major bend in the International Date Line to leave the tip of the Aleutians in the same day as the rest of the US, we could have been first and last.

When I flew off of Shemya we were in “tomorrow” by the time we brought up the landing gear, and returned to “yesterday” when we landed. That’s why the military uses UTC for every time keeping function.

Aleuts, contractors, the Coast Guard, and the military are the only people stuck out there, and the Aleuts only have temporary camps. Native Alaskans definitely don’t live there.

There is good birding and a wealth of sea mammals though.

Made through another New Years. I’ll check for bullet holes on the walk around to feed the ferals. Not as much noise this year, so even the fireworks sales were off.

Under three weeks and they are history, starting at the bottom. Well, supporters of Hoover, Harding, Buchanan, Fillmore and Polk will feel better – they moved up in the ratings.
