No sweat on the site, Kryten. Everyone in the business knows that schedules are really more based on hope than reality.
]]>It’s just so incongruous that an agency such as the FCC doesn’t do a site or network backup!! And that CD destruction tip is just (as Badtux said) ROFL!
So… I wonder how many US Gov departments under the Bushmoron ran out and bought Microwave oven’s after reading that notice? LOL
I wish I wasn’t do busy now… I really have the urge to trawl through their library looking for other such bit’s of IT wisdom! LOL
Still made my day! 😀
BTW Bryan, (as you have probably guessed) the beta site trial is delayed. We have decided that we need to move to a new Hosting provider first for several reasons. The plan is to decided this weekend and move ASAP. Once that’s done, and I’ve uploaded the test sites and data etc, I should be back on track.

]]>When I was a sys admin I assumed that people would never back-up so I did it for them automatically, and we had off-site archival storage. Some of the “big iron” procedures from my main frame days make a lot of sense.
A small ball peen hammer is quite effective at rendering a CD unreadable, if you don’t had a pair of tin snips.
]]>That security memo is disturbing for so many reasons… even considering it was written way back in the ancient days of 2002 before network backups were invented and users backed up their own data. Ok, end sarcasm. Who ever heard of a worker backing up their own data? lol Hello, help desk? I deleted an email last year, can you get that back for me.

]]>If you ever wondered how bad the US Gov is at IT, you need only check out this FCC Computer Security Notice from Nov. 2002. The whole thing is a laugh to anyone in IT, but the BEST part is the ‘Computer Security Tip of the Month’ box in the bottom right corner! Good lord… common sense alone should have prevented that *advice* from ever seeing the light of day! Talk about ignorance is bliss… I want whatever they are drinking at the FCC! LOL
It’s a single page PDF. I’m amazed it’s still available for download honestly! I bet nobody there even has a clue how wrong it is. LOL
FCC Computer Security Notice – SYSTEM & DATA BACKUPS
Even the first paragraph is a worry:
If your hard drive crashes here at the FCC, you run the risk of losing some of your data. The Help Desk always puts forth its best effort to salvage your hard work, but it is best to protect your data by having a plan B. You are responsible for making sure that the data that you store on your hard drive is being backed up.
As far as I can tell, it’s a serious notice. I found it in the ‘Contingency Planning’ section of their online library.
Made my day! 😀 😀
]]>The Iditarod is like any other marathon, and you need the mind for it, as well as the ability to bond with your dogs. The best mushers are those that can keep their dogs moving, but not going flat out. They have to be kept on pace for the entire race.
]]>Sad that Nancy had to scratch, I can understand how disappointed she would be, though I suspect she’s more worried about her missing dog. I hope the dog turns up safely.
Thanks again. 🙂
