He would have found the trail and just followed it, which is a lot easier than trying to break trail through deep snow. He would also be able to hear other dogs baying and barking.

It really is rare for a loose dog to never return.

So true! Most likely there’s only one kitchen within 25 miles in that wilderness, so it was a relative no brainer for a good nose. 🙂

Seriously though, I’m relieved to hear that the dog came in. That’s the only part of the Iditarod that’s hard for me – the loss or injury of one of those great dogs.
