Jams, the problem is that they give vegetarians and those of us working on animal issues a bad name with the general public. You try to get laws and regulations altered, and resistance increases every time they show up. They have the money to put up billboards, while local groups are scrambling to fund spay/neuter clinics.

If they do get proof of industry misconduct, its value is watered down by their stunts. They damage the credibility of people who care.

Kryten, Operation Rescue is filled with people who have criminal records for terrorist acts against clinics and health care providers, and they still try to portray themselves as morally superior to their victims. The media coddles them because they claim “religious conviction”. I would rather see criminal convictions, and fewer of these nutjobs on the street.

Rachel Maddow has a *nice* little expose on the nutcase that murdered Dr. George Tiller. Seems he's been in regular contact with that other bunch if imorral nutjobs, Operation Rescue. It also seems that his death could have been prevented had the Fed's simple done their job and enforced the laws. (Which we all know they only do when it suits them). What crass opportunism on the part of PETA. Even the not-wife who has very strident views on vegetarianism thinks this was "F%&£*ng stupid!" jams O'Donnell´s last blog post..Is a new AIDS-like disease emerging in China?

At some point I may recount my interaction with a group of these winners who were picketing a health clinic in the same building as one of my clients. The clinic was financed in part by the Catholic Church, and some of the nurses were nuns who had worked in Central America. It was part of the outreach to migrant workers, and had nothing at all to do with abortions or even birth control. They provided services to women, so they got picketed. The local police who were supposed to be monitoring the situation, tended to stay well away, because the pickets were all “good Christians who had rights too”.

The former clinic that these women would have normally gone to was closed when the people who worked there could no longer tolerate the threats. The terrorists won.

I would venture to guess that no one who stops by here would tolerate animal cruelty, no matter what they eat, and some of us who are omnivores refuse to buy from companies that mistreat their livestock, but PETA is the most obnoxious advocacy group on the entire planet, and I include the whaling whackos from Japan in that count.

John, I refuse to dignify what Cheney and people like him do as hunting. There are combat ranges that offer more of a challenge, and nothing has to die. Better yet, take up paint ball, where the “targets” shoot back.

I firmly believe that PETA is a major hindrance to “Trap, Neuter, and Release” programs, as we get lumped in with them and have to deal with all of the bad feelings they generate. They don’t have any conception of systems in the natural world, or the actual habits of animals. There has to be a balance or there will be a disaster.

Frankly, I don’t know anyone in the animal welfare world around here that wants to be associated with those idiots. They give every cause they endorse a bad name.

What John McKay said. PETA is nuts, but more to the point, PETA is a PITA to people actually interested in reducing the ambient frequency of animal cruelty. Speaking for almost all vegetarians (something I do not usually presume to do, but I believe I can safely say this), we do not appreciate being used as a political lever, especially in a manifestly unrelated matter such as abortion. PETA should be reminded that there is no fixed association of virtue with vegetarianism; I’ll try to avoid more than mentioning the fact that one of the cruelest, most unsavory men of all time was, quite incidentally, a vegetarian. PETA should just STFU.

It’s hard to say which is worse, PETA’s opportunism or their lack of class. I’m pretty strong in my opposition to animal cruelty and canned hunts and in my support no-kill animal shelters. But this is exactly why I have no use or respect for PETA and the animal rights crowd. They do more harm for their cause than good, and they’re annoying jerks to boot.

Thank you! I have been saying this for years. Their real agenda has absolutely nothing to do with “saving the unborn”. They have no respect for life.
