Constitution Day

On September 17th, 1787 in Independence Hall in Philadelphia the original group of American politicians finalized the bill that was the Constitution of the United States.

While it did not take effect until March 4th, 1789, this was the framework of a new type of government that has existed since that time.

The Preamble makes it plain what we are supposed to be all about:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

It might be a good idea if annually we had a joint session of Congress with the President in attendance and someone read the Constitution to them, because they sound really unclear on their job descriptions lately.

So let me get this straight. The Constitution says that government is supposed to provide for the GENERAL welfare — i.e., the welfare of the American people as a whole — and not just the welfare of a privileged few such as bankers and insurance executives? Why, that’s SOCIALISM! And the same fucking assholes who are waving around “Obama Socialist” posters with Obama in whiteface dare whine about how he’s doing shit “the founding fathers” wouldn’t have done? Have they even READ the preamble to the Constitution? Oh what the fuck, of course not, all they’ve ever read is the 2nd Amendment, and even there they only read 5 words of that and ignore the rest of the goddamned thing.

Every one of these stupid-ass motherfuckers ought to be walking around with a poster saying, “I can has brain?” What a buncha fucking morons…

As near as I can tell they have a version that reads:

“We the People of the United States, in Order to provide for the common defense, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.”

They seem to believe that the Department of Defense is the only valid government agency, and the rest of the government is illegal.

It’s a form of “political dyslexia” that allows them to eliminate anything they don’t want to have in documents.

I once had the unnerving experience of hearing that exact statement made to me by a very conservative colleague who, until that moment, I had not realized was a nut-case: “The only valid use of federal tax dollars is defense. Everything else I’m paying to the government is really my money.” For a moment, I thought he was joking… but I misunderestimated him.

I hear it all the time, Steve, and showing them the actual documents doesn’t dissuade them in the slightest. They do the same thing with the Bible, picking and choosing what parts are important.

I’m not joking, they come back from trips to Israel and complain that they couldn’t get ham or shellfish when they were in the country, and when you point them to the relevant chapter and verse, they act like you are crazy for believing that anyone still observes the dietary laws.

Absolutely no anchor in reality. People think I make this stuff up, but it’s like living in an alternate dimension reading the letters column in the Local Puppy Trainer.

You (and the general public) perceive that Congresscritters work for you! The Congresscritters perceive that they work for whoever has the most money to give them.

It’s simple, really. 🙂

It has been decades since you could trust a Congresscritter to do what they say they will do. They now wait for their corporate masters to tell them what to do, no matter what they have told the voters at home.
