Cinco de Mayo

Mexico

Wikipedia usually has to “lock” its Cinco de Mayo page. I suspect it may be related to the sudden appearance of sites opposing the celebration of this semi-holiday and others who have a hissy fit about any Mexican holiday being celebrated in the US.

In Mexico Cinco de Mayo or Batalla de Puebla, is only a really big celebration in the state of Puebla, where the battle took place.

The Mexican army won the Batalla de Puebla on May the 5th, 1862, but the French went on to Mexico City in 1863 after receiving reinforcements and installed Emperor Maximilian.

It has the status of St. Patrick’s Day in the US, an excuse to eat different food, and drink different booze, and be obnoxious show an interest in other cultures.

Margaritas, tacos, and the destruction of piñatas, that’s what it is really about, although some people have other interpretations.

They want to object to Mexican Americans celebrating Cinco de Mayo in the United States? Well, good luck to them with that… in this part (Texas) of our great and diverse nation, they will certainly fail in that attempt. Music, food, drink, revelry, more drink, picnics in the big parks if weather permits, more drink… whatever the holiday’s history, that’s what this is about today. Hey, hand me another Dos Equis…

(Thanks for the link to CG’s photo. I still ROTFLMAO every time I see it!)

I think we should rename this holiday “tighty rightie whitey freakout de mayo”, LOL! Sheesh. Some folks need to just get a life and quit cavorting in bedsheets at night, yo.

In line with CG’s incredibly awful pun, it is amazing when people down here complain about it. They are somewhat famous for liking any with mayo.

Given that Pensacola just celebrated the 450th anniversary of the first landing with a visit from the King of Spain, and Florida used to be a province ruled from Mexico, logically, objecting to Cinco de Mayo would be like objecting to Robert E. Lee. Isn’t it all about “heritage”? Objecting to Cinco de Mayo when you live along Cinco Bayou is rather silly.

Yup, $1.00 margaritas and $.99 tacos. I met some friends at a Mexican restaurant, yesterday evening. Luckily, my friends got there before I did, and managed to get a table. There were people milling all over, waiting for a table. The noise was terrible. I ordered the chicken soup (it is delicious) and when it arrived, I asked for a to go container. I needed to get home and check on Mango because he wasn’t feeling up to snuff. I’m sure most of the people there had a great Cinco de Mayo.

Thanks to the construction of Lowes, Sam’s Club, and WalMart, we now have an Hispanic population in the area. The contractor who put up those buildings imported them, and then left them behind.

They tend to stay invisible, but there are the beginnings of places with real Mexican food in the area.
