Some People Are Capable Of Learning

Because the winds have shifted and are bringing the oil East, the local NPR station, WUWF, was talking to the tourist development officials along the coast about how Memorial Day went [not as bad as had been feared] and what the approaching oil means.

It was interesting to hear these marketing people make the point that you had to be honest with people and tell them the truth about the situation. They said that if you lie to people to bring them down to the coast, they’ll leave angry and won’t be back. But if you tell them the truth, they will believe you when you tell them it is alright to return.

Too bad major corporations haven’t figured that out.

On a happier note, A.B. “Tony” Hayward is toast. BP will dump him as soon as this is resolved, and he knows it, because he replaced the last CEO after the disaster at BP’s Texas refinery. BP dumps the CEO, tells the world they have reformed, and goes back to business as usual.

I’m sure he doesn’t care, he’ll get a $100M golden parachute and retire to the Bahamas.

Unless it is in BP stock 😉

There is probably something in the contract that is going to require that he be fired before he can collect, which is why he is hanging around.

Well, you could always set up a bloggers call to boycott BP! 😉 You’d have to get International blog’s involved though to make it useful, I’m sure that wouldn’t be a problem. 🙂

Hmmm… Seems someone already did it! 😆

Boycott BP Blog

And this…

Seize BP

Seize BP: Campaign Statement and Petition

The government of the United States must seize BP and freeze its assets, and place those funds in trust to begin providing immediate relief to the working people throughout the Gulf states whose jobs, communities, homes and businesses are being harmed or destroyed by the criminally negligent actions of the CEO, Board of Directors and senior management of BP.

Take action now! Sign the Seize BP petition to demand the seizure of BP!

There’s also a big ‘Boycott BP’ Facebook page.

Good to see!! 😀

LOL I only skimmed that interview with Cindy before I posted it above, I just finished reading it fully. 🙂 Some people *DO* learn, and Cindy has. She hit this nail squarly on! 🙂

PG: In the time since your son’s death, you have been on a journey that I’d guess you could’ve never seen coming. What has been the biggest surprise over the past six years?

CS: Democrats and Republicans are equally corrupt and are both working against our interests.

Aint dat da truth! Succinct, true, and to the point! They’ll never allow her into Congress if she keeps that up! 😆 😉 She wouldn’t get into Parliament here either, comes to that! 😐

The problem, Kryten, is that most Americans *like* it that way. Because they feel that if they ever “make it”, they deserve to be coddled by a corrupt crony political class too. Of course, they never will “make it” — if you’re born rich in the US you tend to die rich in the US, if you’re born poor in the US you tend to die poor in the US, with very few exceptions to the contrary, we have a very stratified society with almost non-existent social mobility compared to civilized nations — but every American loves to dream that he’s going to figure out some way to make a million bajillion bucks and then be in the same place as the rest of the oligarchs, with corrupt politicians at his beck and call.

So Cindy Sheehan’s observation gets a big shrug from most Americans. And they continue voting for the same corrupt politicians they’ve voted for over and over again, rather than for someone who isn’t in the pocket of the oligarchs. Indeed, the more corrupt you are, the more bribe money err “campaign contributions” you’ve accepted from the oligarchs, the more likely you are to be elected here in the USA. Baffling, astounding even, but true.

Hail Seizure! I admit it is highly unlikely. But in a just world (heh), BP as currently constituted should be put altogether out of business.

Regarding Cindy Sheehan: Soon enough, there will be two kinds of people in America: those like Cindy who have nothing left to lose, and those like, say, Tony Hayward who have nothing further to gain. As either of those types is free to do literally anything, I think the split is a recipe for internal strife. It’s just a matter of when it happens and what incident triggers it. Cheery thought, eh?

Bryan,

Funny, this coincidence that we both wrote about honesty in attracting tourists. You were much more direct than I was, as usual. http://pbrla.blogspot.com/2010/06/loathsome-landfall-likely-thursday-june.html#playground

Kryten, people who can think have already figured that out about the parties in the US. Willful ignorance covers a multitude of sins.

Yes, Badtux, the number of people I hear parroting things like, “death tax” is really getting on my nerves. I would love to pay at the maximum rate because it would mean I was making a lot of money. Who would really want a piece of work like Paris Hilton as their legacy in the world?

That was terrible, Steve, at least three groans. On the more serious side, I am worried about what happens down here after people really understand what oil on the beaches means. What are people going to do for the rest of their lives, because they have no back-up plan?

John, I think even the politicians are finally realizing they don’t like being lied to by BP and have figured out that their political if not actual lives depend on telling the truth. The developers are all broke, so they have no support. The lies and incompetence are getting to all of us.
