Stamp Out Hunger

The National Association of Letter Carriers’ annual food drive, Stamp Out Hunger, takes place in most areas this Saturday, May 14th. This is a major source for the nation’s food pantries who are having a hard time keeping up with demand.

Fill a bag with non-perishables and leave it by your mail box if you can. If you don’t have a mail box, most post offices will have a collection point.

While the USPS provides some support, this effort is driven by the carriers themselves.

Given the way the Post Office is going, by next spring we’ll be holding this collection for the former postal carriers.

They are really cutting back, and it is very annoying if you need to go into the post office for something. The lines are long as there few people still working in the post office itself. Our local carrier keeps getting more territory to cover.

I don’t know where my P.O. is hiring its temps, but for the past two weeks, my PO Box has contained a genuine nightmare of misthrown mail that should have gone to the boxes above, below, left, or right of mine… if they’re even that close. I have no idea whether I’m receiving all my own mail or not; I’m || this close to arranging to receive all my bills by email. I already pay my bills online; the USPS around here is simply not reliable enough, and with the new draconian late fees / rate increases on credit cards, I just don’t dare take the chance.

It doesn’t have to be this way… indeed, I’ve had this box for about 20 years, and it wasn’t this way back then.

There aren’t any temps, just full-timers with doubled work loads and half the benefits of 20 years ago. The cancer of WalMart is spreading everywhere.

BTW… the bag of goodies is out by the mail slot. Thanks for the reminder.
