One day I left my front door pulled to but not latched while I chatted with a neighbor. A raccoon managed to sneak past me, down the hall, into the apartment and pop the lid on a large covered metal canister containing cat food. She had pretty much eaten her fill by the time I managed to chase her off. Feeding the cats outdoors was simply not an option; the food would vanish as if by magic.

We used to have a raccoon problem, but it was with my Mother’s water garden. The average cheap goldfish will grow to 6-8 inches in a year in a large pond, and the raccoons would raid the pond and eat them.

I have a friend who lives by a creek, and he had a heck of a time with raccoons raiding his cat food. He kept it in a garbage can in his greenhouse [he bought the huge bag of kibble at Sam’s Club], and they would break in, pop the lid, and wipe him out overnight.

These days it is rare to see any evidence of a raccoon, but we have ‘possums.

As befitting her namesake who was reputed to have a hollow ring filled with poison to off enemies of the family.

Just curious, Bryan, have you had a problem with raccoons raiding your feeding stations? Or do the times you put out the food attract sufficient feline attention that any marauding raccoon would feel distinctly unwelcome?
