It does make one suspect that they have spent so much time with the dogs that many mushers are color-blind, but I think it is a matter of what is available when they had to be made. I think we can agree that those colors would definitely be available … probably in the $5 bin [everything is inflated in the North, like eggs for $2 apiece]. Apparently the prototypes were socks with the toes cut off that were held in place by string.
