Remember that defense spending approached 10% of GDP during some years of those “good old days”, which was pork galore for many a defense contractor. Now we’re hard-pressed to hit 4% GDP defense spending, so of *course* they pine for the good old days when they were ripping us off for 6% more :twisted:.

It was basically a personal feifdom of the Carolingian dynasty but spun apart rapidly after Charlemagne’s demise until it basically was a loose coalition of independent states with a powerless elected monarch rather than a united entity.
