They remember the Stasi, the way their oldest generation remembers the Gestapo, and they don’t like it.

It looks like Snowden’s options for asylum are increasing every day, thanks to the attitude of the US government.

A trade agreement with Ecuador is supposed to take effect this Monday. If the US puts a hold on it, Ecuador will give Snowden asylum. The government will have to or face a fierce political backlash for caving in to the US. The US doesn’t seem to understand diplomacy any more, we just go around issuing commands to people.
