I used to put a reflector work light on the back concrete pad for the ferals in the winter, but used a lot of electricity warming up the concrete. I bought the pad for Sox, and put it outside after he passed. It uses the power as a night light staying warm until a cat gets on, then it uses about 25 watts to raise the temperature to about 100°, the normal temperature for a cat. It is on the former base of a pool table that someone dumped under the house, which warms up to share the warmth.
I’ll probably put a windbreak of some kind over it, at some point.
