Common law marriage is part of English Common Law because only the wealthy could afford all of the costs associated with an ‘official’ marriage for centuries. As a result ‘living together’ is the historical ‘traditional marriage’ in the English speaking world.
]]>Her clerks admitted that they had wanted to issue the licenses but were scared that she would fire them if they did because she had expressly forbidden them to do so. The only clerk who refused to issue licenses was her son, and the judge basically just rolled his eyes at that.
Really, this woman needs to find a different profession if she doesn’t want to comply with the oath she took on the Bible to uphold the Constitution and the laws of the State of Tennessee. Given her experience with the subject, I suggest marriage counselor. 🙂
