It isn’t clear that he was the Vladimir Smirnov who went to the city of Lviv/Lvov/Lemberg that is currently in the Ukraine, but has also been German, Polish, or Russian at various times. Another Vladimir Smirnov went to France and changed the name to the French spelling “Smirnoff”. It is known that the US Smirnoff vodka was originally made by a grain buyer for the original Russian Smirnov’s who received a license from V.P. Smirnov.

After the fall of the Soviet Union another Smirnov family member began making vodka in Russia, and there were a number of law suits. Currently the European ‘Smirnoff’ is the brand sold outside of Russia, but Smirnov is what you’ll get inside.

Well after you meet so many they all look alike…

Vladimir Smirnov never made any in the United States, he licensed the “Smirnoff” brand to a Russian immigrant who then was forced to sell it to an Anglo, and I have no idea what happened to Vlad, other than that he likely didn’t survive WW2 since he was in Poland in the 1930’s when he licensed the brand. If you have more info about what happened to poor Vlad, I’d be interested in hearing about it.

Sessions claims he can’t remember meeting the Russian ambassador. A lot of that going around. Heh.
