People don’t seem to understand that a 15 foot storm surge is going to flood the bottom third of the state. They are paving over things and the water can’t soak in like it does up here. They should have gone to the other house for a month. There isn’t a lot of redundancy in the Florida power grid, and there are crews dealing with Harvey, so this will be a mess.

I wouldn’t have stayed either, and this couple has a second home in Virginia, so bugging out would have been simple for them. But they are not on the beach itself, and I think they are far enough inland that storm surge isn’t going to be an issue. Still…why stay around? Board up and go to the other house for a couple weeks.

They did post a couple of hours ago that they had 2 tornado warnings in the intervening time, and they still had power as of time of posting, although a bunch of people in that area were out of power. She said she was really ready for the howling to end and be able to get a good night’s sleep.

The feral colony is gone after 20 years of “Trap, Neuter, Release”.Miami is getting the bad east side of the storm. The winds are higher and extend out further on the east side than the west. That’s a big reason I’m not worried. The nasty outer bands with embedded tornadoes are also on the east side.

I wish you friends well, but I wouldn’t have hung around were I down there.

That joke was too true 😉

Their last report was of roaring winds and blinking lights, but they were expecting another band of wind/rain. That was a few hours ago and haven’t had any reports since they said they were turning off all electronics.

Good to hear that it’s probably going to bypass you. If you had to leave, how many cats will be in tow? They’re probably going to love the disruption…not!

Yes, Kryten, it was a tacky joke, but it struck me as funny at the time.

As of 4PM CDT Irma was 612 miles [985 km] southeast of me. The only 3-hour advisory I miss is the 1AM. I have a number of ‘newby’ residents of Florida who are panicking. If it looks bad the cats & I are gone.

All those tax havens… Wonder if all the ppl *invested* there will rush to help out? The ones that do will probably be the ones with a vested interest in getting them back on their feet pronto! And screw the USA’s problems @ the same time. *shrug*

Last time I looked it was expected too far to the east to be much of an issue for you. Blink and everything changes! Stay high and dry.

And yeah, it is beginning to look apocalyptic out there, three major hurricanes and an 8.0.

Saw a cartoon where the Climate is watching tv and sees Trump say there is no climate change. Climate turns to his friend and says “Hold my beer.”

It is possible that his rapid exit had something to do with a legal problem and he is avoiding a subpoena or warrant. If his house or any of Trump’s properties gets flattened, there is no one available to fix them because of his & Trump’s persecution of the undocumented workers.

I hope Rush Limbaugh figures out that Irma is not a Liberal conspiracy…. just about the time it flattens his home…

Mustang Bobby has evacuated. A good move, because even if his house survives, it will be days or weeks before there is power in Miami. In Ivan my power was restored by a crew from New Jersey. Covering Harvey and Irma is going to stretch resources.

Mexico has been helpful in the past, but they just got hit with a magnitude 8.1 earthquake while waiting for Katia to hit as a category 2 or higher hurricane on their Gulf Coast.
