The French aristocracy did help out, but they were a nasty piece of work. Alas the follow-on government learned how to govern from the worse of the lot.

On the one hand, the regime being overthrown had helped them win independence from England, so there was a notion that maybe the overthrow of a friendly regime was not a good thing. On the other hand, revolution! The Federalists weren’t fond of the whole French Revolution thing, while the Democratic-Republicans were fervent admirers of the revolution. Until it started beheading mass numbers of people. That sort of soured Americans on the thing.
