RIP Steve Gilliard, 1966-2007
A singular voice has been lost. Whether it was journalism, politics, military history, food, the Mets, or soccer – Steve went all out.
My deepest condolences to his friends and family.

"There are two novels that can change a bookish 14-year old's life: The Lord of the Rings and Atlas Shrugged. One is a childish fantasy that often engenders a lifelong obsession with its unbelievable heroes, leading to an emotionally stunted, socially crippled adulthood, unable to deal with the real world. The other, of course, involves orcs."

oh no! i’m sorry to hear this.
When he went back to the hospital after having already had heart surgery, it didn’t look look. He was diabetic, and that causes all kinds of circulatory problems which lead to kidney failure and the heart problems.
I didn’t always agree with him, but I knew why he thought he way he did.
I didn’t know what his health problems were, just that things were serious. I hadn’t been visiting his site much lately, but he was one of the first bloggers I ever read, and his site was one of my “must reads” for a long time.
