Oman, The Rain Is Gonu Come

Tropical Cyclone Gonu

[Map updated for Tuesday coordinates]

Via Ellroon at Rants From The Rookery, Oman can expect a visit from Tropical Cyclone Gonu, and we can expect higher gas prices.

That is not a good place for a hurricane, with all of the oil production, the supertankers, three US aircraft carrier groups, this could be a very expensive hurricane/tropical cyclone indeed.

[Steve Bates is on R&R, so someone has to publish bad puns.]

Every ship’s captain in the Persian Gulf is having a fit. Supertankers and aircraft carriers are not nimble vessels, and you can’t move an oil refinery.

I’m baaaack… and your pun was as bad as anything I’ve ever committed! 🙂

I really don’t like the look of that storm. A Category 3 in that location could really mess up a lot of things.

It’s definitely going to mess up oil deliveries, and most of the water in that area is shallow, so there will be a nasty storm surge back into the Persian Gulf. I would hate to be a sub skipper in the Persian Gulf.

Belive me, Gonu did mess up a lot of things in Muscat….my parents live there….and r cocooned in their house right now,… water striking in from everywhere (latest info from Mom)….I’m gnawing off my nails here in Hungary….waiting for news from the area….as i hve no contact w/ them…..no electricity there, no internet access, no nothing at the moment.
Despite all this i still believe that Oman is the most (!) beautiful country i’ve ever been to!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As someone who has lived through a lot of hurricanes, the thought of this thing striking an area that knows nothing about hurricanes is very scary.

My worry, speaking from experience, is the relatively low land of Oman, and the storm surge in an enclosed waterway like the Gulf of Oman. It isn’t the wind, as bad as that is, it’s the water that causes most of the damage. Oman has no way of dealing with the water, because you don’t put storm sewers in a desert.

The intensity dropped before landfall, so the damage won’t be as bad as anticipated two days ago when Gonu had the 150 knot winds, but it will be a long time before utilities are re-established.

All the best for your family, Yaya.
