Why I Avoid TV [Part 01]

I need to do something that is going to require about 12 hours without rain, so when I was checking my Mother’s house in the afternoon I turned on her TV for the Weather Channel.

While looking for the weather I saw Patrick Leahy and stopped to listen. He was commenting on this story:

[CBS version] White House, Cheney Subpoenaed On Spying

(CBS/AP) The Senate Judiciary Committee subpoenaed the White House and Vice President Dick Cheney’s office Wednesday for documents relating to President Bush’s controversial eavesdropping program that operated warrant-free for five years.

Also named in subpoenas signed by committee Chairman Patrick Leahy, D-Vt., were the Justice Department and the National Security Council. The four parties have until July 18 to comply, according to a statement by Leahy’s office.

The committee wants documents that might shed light on internal disputes within the administration over the legality of the program, which Bush put under court review earlier this year.

“Our attempts to obtain information through testimony of administration witnesses have been met with a consistent pattern of evasion and misdirection,” Leahy said in his cover letters for the subpoenas. “There is no legitimate argument for withholding the requested materials from this committee.”

I was seeing this on CNN, but just as Pat was getting wound up they cut away, with the reader saying that Senator Leahy was talking about whether we should wiretap terrorists. I was stunned by the stupidity. The man was talking about whether the Executive was lying and breaking the law by wiretapping, without a warrant, people with no connection to terrorists.

I’m assuming the reader was Kyra Phillips, if she has maroon hair [my last high school and first university had maroon and white as their colors, so I know what it looks like].

Whatever the color of her hair, that reader was clearly a maroon… (un)fortunately, I don’t have cable (see the thread downstream), so I don’t know the players. I do know the color. If there are two colors every Texan must know, they are maroon and burnt orange. (I’m partial to blue and gray myself, but not many Texans share my preference.)

From what I read, CNN is turning into the new Fox, with ABC not far behind. Great, just great… all we need is another two such networks.

(Why are you counting reasons to dislike TV in binary?)

I looked it up on the ‘Net based on the time I saw it. I doubted she was named Don Lemon, even if her attitude was somewhat sour.

I’m trying on a Manichian worldview, but it’s a bit limiting, as is television.
