Jeff Masters left behind his wrap-up of the 2008 hurricane season as he heads to Puerto Rico for a vacation, totally unconcerned about Invest 96 which has been hanging off the coast of Panama for several days.
It would be nice to have a really boring season next year, one with no new records.
In other weather news, The Los Angeles Times reports on the heavy rains about to hit the areas that were devastated by the fires. While the rains will ensure that the fires are definitely out, the lack of vegetation to hold and slow the water will result in mud slides and flooding in the areas trying to recover from the fire devastation.
Many of the same people who just evacuated because of the fire threat, now must leave because of the flood threat.

scrap the “about to hit.” big rain hitting now.
Stay dry, Jill. Add some hip waders to your Nomex overalls wardrobe.
The hip waders will come in handy when the ice caps melt and our little town, most of which is just barely above sea level, will be…well…back to it’s natural “swamp” like existence.
My favorite named street in town is Salsipuedes…which literally means “Get Out if You Can” as when the rains came the area would turn to quicksandish mud.
While you will get wet, Florida will disappear almost to it’s northern border, but Al Gore needs to be on a diet.
I just have to run out in the first big rain. Living in Los Angeles, it is such a rare event. I miss it.
Just don’t get caught in the LA River when it rains in the mountains. Most people have seen dozens of car chases in the river bed and don’t have any idea that it is a river, as most of the time it looks like an empty freeway with a gutter in the center.
