Using The Tools
Via Danger Room, some media outlets are trying to use the available tools for reporting.
Al Jazeera has set up a site, War on Gaza that is attempting to integrate input from people on the scene with a map to give an up-to-date view of what is going on. Cell service is still functioning to a limited extent and people are sending text messages to Al Jazeera reporting what they can see.
The Israelis aren’t going to like this, and there will be jamming activities shortly, if they don’t just cut off all Internet connections. Of course that cable cut between Egypt and Europe was just an accident.

Oh yes. 🙂 Israel seem rather unlucky in that regard… what with all those strangely coincidental accidents that occur with anything they have an interest in. 🙂 Just a coincidence, I’m sure. 😀
I saw this comment that I felt was reasonably accurate on Al Jazeera on the post about Obama taking the easy out.
And, I guess we’ll see how accurate this comment is:
Whatever, get ready for a very bumpy ride.
US policy regarding Israel isn’t going to turn on a dime. I think its a question of whether we’re going to figure it out by ourselves and try to support a more sensible I/P policy or the creeping irrelevance of the US is going to make our jumping when Israel barks less effective.
I think a declining economy will also have an impact on how much foreign aid we give out — at least I hope so. Though we’ll probably cut off valuable programs long before we give up one missile going to Israel.
If the US government wants to send a message, all it has to do is nothing about a new ambassador to Israel. Withdraw the current ambassador and let the post sit empty.
If they ask, the best response would be “We don’t have anyone in Israel we can talk to”. That has the side benefit of being true, because there is no obvious leader in Israel at the moment.
