It would appear that fashion is one of the more important items to be considered when judging the success of an inauguration as many are commenting on two hats.

Obviously the most important is Aretha Franklin’s hat. The LA Times says “The $179 hat, customized with Swarovski crystals, came from Mr. Song Millinery in Detroit where Luke Song has been making ladies dress hats for 25 years.”

I saw a wool felt cloche hat with a decorative ribbon that would keep her head warm and stop the wind. The design, popular during the 1920s and ’30s, also keeps the hair over the ears. This combined with a matching wool scarf and gloves, and a high collar coat with narrow double-breasted detailing kept her warm, and shows the wisdom of someone from Detroit dealing with a cold windy day outside. Anyone who doesn’t understand the hat should put “church hat” into a search engine and be prepared for the flood.

The other hat of note was on Representative Sanford Bishop, a Blue Dog sitting in front of John Lewis in the Georgia delegation. The Eagle Scout and former Army officer wouldn’t appreciate some of the things said about his red fedora and scarf. A lot of the Georgia delegation wore red, no doubt telling people at home to look for them on TV. Another flood awaits you if you put “red hat inauguration” into a search engine. I think a Mardi Gras head dress would have been the only way to have been unique on the Mall yesterday.

Speaking of red, the red-coated Fife and Drum Corps is part of the Third Infantry Regiment, which also guards the Tomb of the Unknown, provides the honor guard for Army funerals at Arlington, provides the Presidential Guard, the Army Drill Team, and most other ceremonial functions in the Capital Military District. They are referred to as “The Old Guard” as they are the oldest unit in the US Army.

On the other hand, punch in “red pimp hat” into Google Images. Heh!

Bishop is not known for a sense of humor. For example, he is supposedly a fiscal conservative, unless it involves wars of choice or price supports for peanuts.

So you’re saying he’s a pimp for wars of choice and price supports for peanuts? :-).

One man’s waste and pork, is another man’s necessity. They just don’t understand the hypocrisy.

Fifes are easy to play… unless you’re trying to get a couple dozen of them to sound in tune in unison. Be suitably impressed with what you heard!

I liked Aretha’s hat. It showed she has good common sense… and style too.

I love hats. I have a collection of them … for all seasons. No way I would have stood outside in the cold without my fleece bucket hat pulled down around my ears. (Nor would I garden in the sun without one of my big straw hats.)

I’m impressed with anyone who can make any instrument produce music, and doing it while marching in those conditions, is even more impressive. Wind control while shivering has to be tough.

No argument from me Lady Min, I’ve worn hats my entire life. When there’s no hair on your head, you learn how hard rain drops can be.
