Hey! It’s about to start soon! It’s the one time of the year that I allow myself the luxury of following a sport. I do so love these dogs.

I noticed that Colleen Robertia isn’t running this year. I’ll miss her group of dogs. They were fun to follow.

The start went off without a hitch at 10AM AKST [1PM CST]. The actual racing starts at 2PM AKST [5PM CST] Sunday at Willow.

This is a smaller than normal field, reflecting the economy, but Zoya DeNure, ex-fashion model and musher for runts, rejects, and strays is set to go with her mini-husky [35 pounds], Sebe, in the lead.

I just discovered that Aliy Zirkle is going with a 34 pound dog, Boondocks. No one mentioned it, but her husband, Allen Moore, had Boondocks on his team in this year’s Yukon Quest, and was logged as the smallest dog in the race. The thing about teams is that they require more than just power, they need to want to run. If a small dog can provide it, you go with her. [Females tend to be lighter than the males, coming in at 45-50 pounds].

I still looking for someone running the purebreds, but no luck. The usual crew, Karen Ramstead [shows Siberians as well as racing them] and Blake Freking [all white Siberians] are sitting the Iditarod out this year.

I’ll enjoy keeping up with Aliy’s team. The fact that these dogs can run the Iditarod just goes to show that the “rejects” can still be very good dogs. Especially if the handler believes in them and gives them a chance.

I wonder why Karen decided to stay out this year.
