Saint George’s Day

Cross of St. George

Saint George is the patron saint of England, Georgia [the country], Bulgaria, Portugal, Catalonia, and the city of Moscow. Orthodox countries tend to celebrate George on November 23rd.

PETA condemns George for his senseless slaughter of dragons. The YWCA condemns the condemnation and wants to know when PETA is going to volunteer to be DragonChow™

International Day of the Book UNESCO

It is also the birth and death day of Billy the Bard, who was a great writer in desperate need of a spelling checker.

Master Shakespeare gave all of the best lines to villains supplying low humor to those who have read the Folio, e.g. Arlen Specter quoting Iago, reputedly in support of Clarence Thomas.

St George needs a lighter burden. After all he is the patron saint of many countries, cities and trades. THe poor fellow is also the patron saint of herpes sufferers and syphilitics!

Standards for the content of pet food, including DragonChow™, have improved over the years. PETA almost certainly exceeds the maximum allowed slime content for an ingredient in DragonChow™.

(I’m sorry. People often expect me to hold a different view of PETA. But the fact is that I find them wholly unhelpful and nonconstructive in pursuing the serious animal rights issues of the day. Those of us who have attempted… in the real world… to address issues of animal cruelty find that the very presence of PETA makes our jobs more difficult.)

Well, Jams, he was a soldier after all, but he does seem to be a bit of an odd-jobs saint that picks up causes none of the others want to do.

Steve, they were annoying until they became the “mink murderers”. They “liberated” hundreds of farm-raised minks who didn’t have any idea of how to survive in the wild. While many returned to the farm at feeding time, many became roadkill on the local highways, while others wiped out chicken farms.

They demonstrated that they have no understanding of animals or animal behavior, which proves to me that their cause is about them, not about the animals.

Bryan, it is my good fortune that my father encountered a farm-raised minx and married her… oh wait… that’s something completely different. <emily_litella_voice> Never mind! </emily_litella_voice>

PETA seems ready to enforce its notion of “ethical” treatment on everyone. As committed as I am to animal welfare, I do not presume that right, and they shouldn’t, either. Then there’s the matter of their methods… completely ineffective at anything except garnering them a great deal of attention and giving a bad name to the rest of us.

Yeah, it is more about them, than the animals. They would do more good just funding no-kill shelters than pulling stunts.
